The Broughton Rules of 1743 were superseded by the London Prize Ring
Rules of 1838. In 1884 the 8th marquis of Queensberry, with the help of
John G. Chambers, put forward the Queensberry Rules, that called for
gloved contests. |

All professional championship fights were contested with bare knuckles
until 1892, in a world heavyweight championship bout between John L.
Sullivan and James J. Corbett in New Orleans, where both contestants
wore regulation gloves. |

Andy Bowen and Jack Burke fought for seven hours and 19 minutes in New
